Costa Rica Practices Catch & Release for Bill Fish Species

For as long as I can remember, there have been countless amounts of anglers traveling from all over the world to come down and experience amazing sport fishing in Costa Rica.   If you ever do a google search on the sport fishing history in Costa Rica you will find hundreds of photos and fishing reports dating back to when the fishing boom started.

The avid and well informed angler, understands that here in Costa Rica we protect the Bill Fish species which are the Sailfish and Marlin.  These species are some of the most sough out when fishing offshore.  However, the novice angler or just someone who doesn’t know about sport fishing will make comments such as “every fish you take out of the water will eventually die”.   I am here to explain that this is not true.  The fishermen all over Costa Rica practice save fishing to help protect the Bill Fish species.

What do the fishermen do to help protect these beautiful species?

Every first mate must wear protective gloves which are used to help protect the skin of the Sailfish and Marlin.   The hooks used when going deep sea fishing are easily dissolved within a period of 1 month.  These practices have been done for many years and you can see the results, Costa Rica has amazing reports for Bill Fish released.
